About Me

Welcome to Parenting Gifted Kids!  I'm Sarah, the face behind {most of} the words!

I grew up gifted- and survived!  My wonderful parents raised six amazing, creative and talented gifted children all the way to successful adulthood and lived to tell the tale!  I was parent of a frontline self-contained gifted program where I was fortunate to find support and acceptance.

Despite the supportive environment, I always knew there was something different. I grew up before parents and teachers really knew how to meet the social and emotional needs of gifted children.  While I was academically thriving, I struggled with finding a place where I fit socially and had bouts of existential depression in my teenage years.

I entered college and found my way to courses in anthropology and sociology.  Understanding the science of relationships opened the world to me. I ended up receiving a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Marriage and Family.

Later on, I decided I wanted to share that knowledge with parents and gifted students in an effort to help other children avoid my own experiences.  I went back to school to get my Master's in Education with an emphasis on Giftedness.  I spent several years in the classroom before leaving the profession to raise and homeschool my own children.

Several years ago, I was asked to author The Everything Parent's Guide to Raising a Gifted Child, which allowed me to connect with countless other parents, children and educators within the gifted community.

I started this website because so many parents came to me asking all the right questions, and wanting help.  This website was born from their desire to understand and raise thriving gifted children.  Soon, people were contacting me from all over the country and the world to share their questions and concerns.

This website is composed of my stories from thirty-plus years immersed in giftedness.  But my personal stories have become part of a larger story that includes so many others and their experiences.

Parenting Gifted Kids has become a community and a safe haven for parents and children looking for understanding and connection.  Won't you please join us?
